The Truth and Reconciliation Commission today announced that amnesty was granted to two members of the Security Branch of the South African Police for their role in the shooting that took place on 3 March 1986 in Guguletu. This was the incident commonly known as the killing of the Guguletu 7.
Amnesty was accordingly granted to Wilhelm Riaan Bellingan in respect of the shooting of ZJ Konile and to Thapelo Johannes Mbelo in respect of the shooting of T Mlifi on 3 March 1986.
The committee found that the applicants acted in the scope of their duties and within the scope of their authority and that they have complied with the requirements of the Act.
