DEPUTY PRESIDENT ZUMA OPENS A ROADSIDE CLINIC ON THE LAST DAY OF SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS/CONDOM WEEK

Deputy President Jacob Zuma will on Saturday, 16 February 2002, launch a roadside clinic for truck drivers in Messina, Northern Province, aimed at arresting the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections.

The launch coincides with the last day of the Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)/Condom week which started on Monday, 11 February 2002.

During this week the government, through the Government Action Aids Programme (GAAP) focuses on educating people about the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and the impact such diseases have on HIV/AIDS.

The clinic, to be called Messina Roadside, is to be situated on the busy Beit Bridge border crossing between South Africa and Zimbabwe and will target truck drivers primarily.

Accompanying the Deputy President, who is also the Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council (Sanac), will be the Minister of Health Dr Manto Tshabalala - Msimang and provincial and local government leaders.
