The Department of Foreign Affairs, is currently conducting an impact assessment following the eruption of the volcano in Goma, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the report of which will be presented to President Thabo Mbeki.
Preliminary information suggests that blankets, food, shelter, water, clothing and evacuation equipment are required most urgently.
It will then be decided as to the level of assistance South Africa will be able to provide to the people of Goma. In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has confirmed that the President will indeed consider such a request for assistance.
