VISIT BY DEPUTY PRESIDENT JACOB ZUMA TO BURUNDI AND TANZANIA

Deputy President Jacob Zuma will visit Burundi and Tanzania from 10th-12th January 2002 as part of SA’s ongoing efforts and intiatives aimed at bringing about the successful implementation of the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Process. This follows the visit of the President of Burundi, Pierre Buyoya to South Africa on 14 and 15 December 2001.

The Deputy President will brief the Transitional Government on progress made in negotiations with the rebels, to exchange views and receive a report from the Transitional Government on progress made thus far in consolidating the Peace Process.

Deputy President Zuma will also meet with the President of the Republic of Tanzania, Benjamin Nkapa, on 12 January 2002, to brief the Tanzanian authorities on developments in Burundi and to solicit the support of Tanzania, as a key strategic partner in the region, towards finding a lasting solution to the Burundi Peace Process.
