MEMORIAL SERVICE

The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar, will attend a memorial service at Mosterloos Stadium, Grobelasdal, in the Northern Province tomorrow. Minister Omar will join the Premier of the Northern Province, Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi and the MEC for Agriculture, Aaron Motswaledi and other senior government officials at the service.

On Sunday night (31 December 2001) forty-eight (48) members of the Chego family were killed and several others seriously injured when a truck they were travelling in overturned at Roossenekal, Mpumalanga.

The truck, carrying about 120 people, overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle around 8pm killing 48 people instantly. The Chego Family was on its way to their ancestors' graves on a farm in the area to attend an annual family gathering when the accident occurred.

The injured were taken to Middleburg and Witbank hospitals.

On behalf of the Presidency and the entire South African Government, Minister Omar honoured the fallen heroes.
