GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTION TO ALGERIA FOR RELIEF OF FLOOD VICTIMS

Issued by Department of Foreign Affairs

29 November 2001

The South African Government has contributed an amount of R500 000 (five hundred thousand rand) to the victims of the recent floods in Algeria. The contribution will be effected through the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva for delivery through the Algerian Red Crescent society.

As expressed in a personal letter from President Thabo Mbeki to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, South Africa expressed its deep sorrow to the families who have lost their loved ones during this tragic period and share in their grief. The thoughts and prayers of all South Africans, more so during the holy month of Ramaadan are with the people of Algeria during this difficult period.

This contribution to the Government and people of Algeria is testimony to the importance and compassion that the people of South Africa attach to the wellbeing of the people of Algeria. In addition, the South African Government would like to invite the South African Private Sector to consider the flood relief assistance to Algeria.

In this regard, companies such as Aspen Pharmcare are to be applauded for their financial contribution to these relief efforts.

Algeria can always rely on South Africa to give assistance within its limited resources in this hour of need, pain and suffering occasioned by the floods.
