President Mbeki learnt with shock and sadness of the passing of Johannes Modise this evening.
The President visited the home of the Modise family earlier this evening to pay condolences and respects on behalf of all South Africans to the family. All our thoughts are with them during this time of grief.
As a former Minister of Defence in South Africa's democratically elected government and a veteran freedom fighter, Joe Modise will long be remembered as a stalwart of our fight for liberation and one who served his country well.
May his soul rest in peace.
