The Promotion of Access to Information Act 2, of 2000 came into operation on 9 March 2001, with the exception of Sections: 10, 14, 16 and 51. It was earlier announced that the intended date for commencement of the said sections is 23 November 2001
Due to certain practical problems these sections of the Act will not come into operation on 23 November 2001. Steps are however being taken to have the sections implemented very soon. The date of commencement is not yet known.
The Promotion of Access to Information Act is important because it gives effect to the constitutional right of access to information as enshrined in Section 32 of the Constitution.
