STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT MBEKI'S HOSTING OF THE MIDDLE EAST INITIATIVE MEETING

In response to media enquiries on the matter the Presidency wishes to confirm that President Thabo Mbeki will chair a meeting of the Middle East Initiative between Israeli and Palestinian officials later this week.

The meeting will be attended by Yossi Beilin, a former Cabinet Minister, well known for his design of the Israeli-Palestinian interim accords. Others include prominent activists from both sides who are part of the continued dialogue for peace.

The security situation in the Middle East and South Africa's contribution in the search for peace and stability in the region are some of the determining factors in holding the meeting in South Africa.
