The Department of Public Enterprises is pleased to announce that Cabinet approved the appointment of Malixole Gantsho as Deputy Director General and Head of Restructuring. This appointment is effective from 1 November 2001.
Mr. Gantsho has been with the Department of Public Enterprises since April 2000 and is currently Head of SOE Performance Monitoring and Benchmarking, a division that monitors the performance of state owned enterprises (SOEs) in inter alia, areas of corporate governance, financial performance, risk management, economic and investment strategy. In this capacity he led the initiative to draw up Shareholder Compacts for the six larger SOEs as a vehicle to manage government’s significant shareholding interests in these, viz. Transnet, Denel, Eskom, Alexkor, Aventura and Safcol.
He is taking over from Mr. Leslie Maasdorp who plans to return to the private sector when his contract with the Department ends. He will stay with the Department in an advisory capacity until that time.
A lawyer by training, Mr Gantsho spent the first part of his career as State Prosecutor in the lower magistrate courts, subsequently serving as Regional Court Control Prosecutor for ten districts in the then Transkei. He has held judicial appointments as Senior Magistrate both in Windhoek (Namibia) and Durban. His private sector experience as well as his administrative and management skills were honed in stints as Senior Legal and Risk Manager at Tongaat-Hulett Group (Durban) and Umgeni Water (Pietermaritzburg) and as Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board, which he started and developed from scratch.
Malixole is a member of the King Committee Task Team on Corporate Governance and has served as member of the Southern Africa Gaming Regulators Association; member of the National Gambling Board of South Africa; member of the Corporate Lawyers Association of South Africa, member of the South African Risk Managers Association.
As Deputy Director General and Head of Restructuring, Mr Gantsho will direct the restructuring process of state owned enterprises in line with the South African Government objectives. Mr Gantsho is thoroughly familiar with the restructuring of SOEs through his association within the department, and consequently he is well positioned to carry the processes forward.
Mr Gantsho is married with three minor children.
