STATE VISIT BY PRESIDENT MBEKI TO THE REPUBLIC OF MALI

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

28th October 2001

President Mbeki has accepted an invitation from President Konare to visit Mali from 2nd-4th November 2001.

The objectives of the visit are to strengthen bilateral relations, support President Konare's vision of a strong and lasting democracy in Mali and to further examine investment opportunities in Mali.

Relations between South Africa and Mali were strengthened by the signing of an Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Bilateral Commission, during December 2000 and the appointment of an Honorary Consul in Bamako during 2001. The first session of this Commission is scheduled to take place during 2002. This visit will be used to lay the groundwork for an effective and successful JBC.

A number of South African companies are already heavily involved in Mali, notably, Anglogold, Randgold and Eskom Enterprises. All three companies have substantially invested in longterm projects in Mali. These investments not only contributed towards job creation and social benefits for thousands of Mali nationals but also led to the upgrading of infrastructure within the country. Further investment opportunities in various fields will be explored by a trade delegation which will be accompanying President Mbeki.

President Konare, as a leading figure within ECOWAS, is a strong supporter of the MAP/NAI. The state visit will be utilised by the two Presidents to discuss the implementation of MAP/NAI and its benefits to the region, and Mali and particular.

Mali, as a current member of the UN Security Council and leading figure in Small Arms proliferation, is a valued partner and ally of the South African government in West Africa.
