2 October 2001
Deputy President Zuma returned from the 16th Regional Summit on Burundi last night, 1 October 2001.
Heads of state of the Great Lakes region had met to discuss and review progress made in preparation for the installation of the interim government of Burundi on November 1, 2001.
The meeting focused on the creation of the right environment for the transition.
Armed groups were supposed to attend the meeting but did not do so as they received invitations late and logistical arrangements could not be made in time.
They will be invited to the next Summit, due to take place in South Africa next week.
