DFA ESTABLISHED TASK TEAM

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

13 September 2001

The minister of Foreign Affairs has established a task team headed by acting director general Sebina Hlapolosa based at the Union buildings in Pretoria.

Accordingly the task team has made available an emergency number for people who may have family members or relatives that they suspect may have been at the World Trade Centre or on the flights.

The number is 012-351-0072, or 012-324-2442, or 012-351-1000.

The centre will operate on a 24-hour basis.

The Foreign Affairs Department wants to reiterate that the mission in Washington and New York remain in constant communication with US authorities and airlines in an attempt to verify whether there are any South Africans affected.

The United States has requested us to make available a list of names of people that we think may have been either in the World Trade Centre or on flights so that they can match the names to the lists they have.
