STATEMENT ON THE SA-BOTSWANA WEEK 12-15 SEPTEMBER 2001

The South African high commission in Gaborone, in collaboration with the South African business community in Botswana will host the first ever South Africa Week from 12 to 15 September 2001 in Gaborone.

The South Africa Week aims to foster bilateral relations between South Africa and Botswana, while strengthening working relations between South African companies in Botswana and the South African High Commission.

The South Africa Week includes a golf day, a business breakfast, gala dinner and an open day.

The Business Breakfast will be addressed by the Minister of Trade & Industry, Minister Alec Erwin.

South Africa and Botswana have a unique relationship in the Southern African regional context. The two countries, aside from a common border, have a shared history and culture, which necessitates close co-operation in all political and socio-economic spheres.

In the multilateral context, South Africa and Botswana also liaise within the framework of, amongst others, SADC, the Customs Union etc. and share the vision of the New Africa Initiative.
