STATEMENT BY DEPUTY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, MR AZIZ PAHAD, AT THE WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST RACISM

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

5 September 2001

The South African Government and the Delegation representing South Africa at the World Conference Against Racism is confident that the Conference has remained on course and that the redrafting process has begun in earnest in the past 36 hours.

The fact that we are continuing to engage the issues of racism, discrimination and related intolerance already makes this Conference a success. There has been unparalleled focus on slavery, colonialism and the rights of indigenous people and we hope that this will result in a positive and forward-looking text around these issues.

This Conference has been marked by concerns such as the rights of migrants, especially in the developed world and the protection of women and children in conflict situations. It has also paid special attention to the role that national institutions such as human rights commissions and public protectors can play in safeguarding citizens from any form of discrimination.

Impressive progress has been recorded since the beginning of the Conference. This is a testimony to the constructive spirit that has prevailed throughout the proceedings.
