The Minister for Social Development Dr. Zola Skweyiya has welcome the donation of a huge cosignment of blankets, clothes and other goods donated by the SARS for the victims of floods that have devastated many families in several Cape Town areas.
The Minister of Finance, Mr. Trevor Manuel will hand-over the goods tomorrow at 10: 00 at a ceremony to be held at the Customs House, No 9 Table Bay, Boulevard, in Cape Town.
The Secretary General of the South African Council of Churches Rev. Molefe Ntsele , representatives of the Red Cross and other Faith Based Organisations will receive the goods and assist in their distribution to the affected communities.
"We must all work together now more than ever before, to make sure that these donations speedily reach the affected communities and help improve the conditions of the affected families and communities, especially the children and women." Said the Minister.
The ceremony is expected to be attended by representatives of various government Departments nationally, provincially and locally; Community Based Organisations as well as Non Governmental Organisations.
Approximately 50 000 have been affected by the on-going floods in the Cape Town area.
The government has established a disaster relief fund led by the Department of Provincial and Local Government to co-ordinate all the efforts aimed at alleviating the conditions of the affected communities.
