STRIKE HAD MINIMAL IMPACT ON LABOUR MARKET

29 August 2001

The strike by the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) and other organisations over privatisation had a minimal impact on the labour market. According to our assessment which the Department of Labour received from its provinces and labour centres showed that about 30 percent heeded the call to stay away from work. Reports from these centres and provinces varied with others reporting that only few workers took to the streets in Bloemfontein where our officials on the ground indicated that only 150 people took part in a march. In other areas business was not affected with shops and factories operating as usual.
