We welcome the news of agreement on the Kyoto Protocol in Bonn today.
This global decision on the part of nations of the world to act for the common good of humanity fills us hope for the future. The massive build up of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere could not be allowed to continue unchecked.
The expected effects of global warming will have the greatest adverse impact on the African continent. Many believe that climate change is already being manifest in the intensity of floods and growing desertification. In the present situation citizens of Africa and other developing regions of the world are in effect subsidising the economies of developed countries.
The Millennium Africa Recovery Plan, adopted this month by the African Union, embraces the principle of sustainable development to inform the unfolding African Renaissance.
The agreement on the Kyoto Protocol serves as an excellent prelude to next year's Johannesburg World Summit on the Sustainable Development.
