Issued by: Office of the Deputy Presidency
5 July 2001
Deputy-President Jacob Zuma will visit Lebotlwane area in Moretele District in the North West Province on July 6, 2001 as part of government's Imbizo. Imbizo is a style of interactive governance and communication. It seeks to promote closer interaction between government and the people where the people are afforded the opportunity to raise issues and concerns around service delivery so that government can respond better to the concerns of South Africans. Such interaction helps to build a partnership between government and the people.
The President, Deputy-President, Ministers, MEC's, Mayors and other senior government officials will engage with communities and sectors of society around implementation of government's programme of action for social change of service delivery in the period ahead.
Deputy-President Zuma will hold a meeting with traditional leaders and will also visit the clinic around the area, which will culminate in a launch of the Leretlhabetse Multi-Purpose Community Centre (MPCC). The MPCC project is a Cabinet initiative that involves several government departments and co-ordinated by Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).
With the opening of the Leretlhabetse MPCC, Government would have established 11 of the 60 MPCCs earmarked countrywide. The remaining MPCC's will be launched between now and March 2003. Through this initiative, government is implementing its programme of action and is committed to a public service based on objectivity, ability, fairness and the need to redress the imbalances of the past.
MPCC's are one-stop service delivery centres in which all government departments provide the necessary information and fully-fledged services.
These centres are established across the country, in areas that are not serviced properly as a result of marginalisation during the apartheid era.
Local, provincial and national government provide services, but many centres also include services from community groups and NGOs in partnership with government.
Deputy President Zuma will be accompanied by the Premier of North West Province Mr Popo Molefe, Minister in the Presidency Dr Essop Pahad and members of the North West Provincial Executive Council.
