The Minister of Social Development Dr. Zola Skweyiya will tomorrow (1st June 2001 at 11h00) address over 5000 children at Mogale city (Formerly Krugersdorp), on the significance of International Children's Day as well as the government efforts to help children living in poverty, those who are abused as well as those affected or infected by HIV/AIDS.

"The children are the future of this country; their rights are enshrined in the fundamental law of this country, the constitution. There is therefore an urgent need more than ever before, that the entire nation should stand up and promote their rights as well as protect them from all forms of abuse, remove them from poverty and care for those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS." said the Minister.

The Minister is expected to be joined in the rally by the Mayor of Mogale city, Mr. Lentswe Mokgatle and Councillors, the education fraternity, the business sector, the South African Police Service and other dignitaries.

This rally is part of the nation-wide activities and campaigns that are aimed at building awareness about the plight and rights of children. They constitute an integral part of the Child Protection Week (CPW).

CPW is an annual event that takes place between the 28th May and the 3rd June 2001 aimed at highlighting the programmes and problems.

This year's theme for CPW is "Child Protection is Everybody's Business."
