Issued by: Office of the Presidency
9 May 2001
Deputy President Jacob Zuma is to lead a high-powered delegation of Ministers to Mexico and Colombia this weekend, to enhance South Africa's bilateral relations with the two countries. The delegation will include:-
The delegation will leave on Saturday, 12 May 2001, and return to the country on 19 May 2001.
In Colombia, the delegation will explore areas of co-operation regarding crime prevention, particularly relating to Colombia's experience in combating organised crime such as illicit drug trafficking and money laundering. Colombian Deputy President Gustavo Bell Lemus and Deputy President Zuma met at the XI International Anti-Corruption Conference in Durban in October 1999, and a proposal was made that the two countries should initiate a programme of mutual assistance in this regard.
Another key aspect of the visit is a request by Colombia for South Africa to share its experiences of resolving complex political conflicts.
In this regard, Deputy President Zuma will lead discussions on South Africa's multiparty negotiations that paved the way for successful transition to democracy in 1994, including the efforts that led to the resolution of violent conflict in parts of the country such as KwaZulu-Natal. This is aimed at assisting the Colombians to deal with related problems.
In Mexico, Deputy President Zuma and his delegation will be able to cement relationships with the new administration of President Vicente Fox de Quesada. The visit will involve, among other issues, the engagement of Mexico on issues of common concern to developing countries, and will also serve to further develop economic relations. South Africa is Mexico's largest trading partner in Africa.
