The Gauteng Executive Council today concluded a three-day strategic planning retreat to critically evaluate its work to date and plan for the next few years ahead.
The retreat, which was attended by Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa, MECs and heads of provincial government departments, deliberated on key areas of progress in giving effect to the strategic priorities set by the Executive Council in June 1999. These strategic priorities are in the areas of economic growth, infrastructure investment and job creation; quality social service delivery and good governance.
The Executive noted that important progress has been made in fulfilling government's mandate and in creating a better life for the people of the province. However it agreed that in this regard provincial departments and the provincial government as a whole still face key challenges which demand attention in the remainder of government's term of office.
Among the issues discussed were the province's short to long-term strategies on economic growth, job creation and poverty alleviation, public private partnerships, labour-intensive public works programmes, HIV/Aids, quality service delivery and addressing social backlogs.
The Executive reiterated its commitment to working together with all sectors of society to create jobs and fight poverty and identified key priorities in this regard. Among the key focuses ahead will be quality service delivery, particularly in the areas of social services, housing, education and health.
In addition to fine tuning key government programmes which have been set for the 2001/2002 financial year, the retreat lays the basis for the provincial government's planning for the 2002/2003 financial year and subsequent years in terms of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework.
