OMAR SENDS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILIES AND VICTIMS OF THE BUS ACCIDENT

Issued by Department of Transport

11 April 2001

Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar conveyed his sympathy and condolences to families and victims of the bus accident that took place early this morning between Kokstad and Franklen in Kwazulu Natal.

The Minister said it is very painful that so many lives should be lost and such a great pain should be extended to the families and relatives of the victims in this time of happiness and prayers. Omar said Government through the Arrive Alive campaign has put in place all measures in place to ensure that all road users follow the rules of the road.

"We have deployed more visible law enforcement officer on our roads, we have increased the number of patrol vehicles, we are also continuing with our massive education campaigns", Omar said. He warned that all these efforts are immaterial if road users do not take the responsibility and use the road with respect and patience. Passengers must also insist that drivers should drive within the speed limit, take necessary breaks and the vehicle are in good condition.

Initial reports from the accident scene suggest that the driver was heading towards Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape; he lost control of the fully packed bus that immediately went seventy meters down the slope.

It is believed that twenty-nine people have been killed, 55 slightly injured and five critically injured.
