President Thabo Mbeki has been informed about the decision of Finance Minister Trevor Manuel and his wife Lynne Matthews to separate and initiate divorce proceedings.
The President has expressed empathy with both Trevor and Lynne. The President appreciates that it is a difficult period for both Trevor and the children, and he hopes that their wish to be afforded privacy will be respected.
The President views this as a profoundly personal matter which has no bearing on Trevor Manuel's service to the nation as the Minister of Finance.
President Mbeki has full confidence in the Minister, and the issue of his continued responsibility as minister has not arisen and does not arise.
