JOINT STATEMENT BY TREVOR MANUEL AND LYNNE MATTHEWS

6 April 2001

We wish to advise that we have separated and will initiate divorce proceedings. We accept that the next period will be exceedingly difficult for us and, especially, for our three young sons. We therefore ask that we be accorded the privacy and respect to resolve this traumatic period between ourselves.

We express our sincere appreciation for your kind consideration of our request.

The President has been informed and has expressed empathy with both Trevor and Lynne.

The President appreciates that it is a difficult period for both Trevor and the children.

And he hopes that their wish to be afforded privacy will be respected.

The President views this as a profoundly personal matter which has no bearing on Trevor Manuel's service to the nation as the Minister of Finance

The President has full confindence in the minister and the issue of his continued responsibility as minister has not arisen and does not arise.
