2 APRIL 2001
The Minister of Housing, Dumisani Makhaye, wishes to respond as follows to the Democratic Alliance press statement: "Makhaye's name has not been cleared" dated 30 March 2001.
1. It is clear that the Democratic Party has been greatly embarrassed by the recent exposure that its widely reported allegation against Minister Makhaye has no basis.
2. As a result, the DP is now resorting to its well tried and tested method of intimidation against the Speaker. One hopes that the Speaker will not be intimidated into submission.
3. It is really frightening for the DP to say it has confidence in the Speaker.
4. For the DP, for its baseless allegation against Minister Makhaye, there is only one logical conclusion - that Makhaye must be found guilty by hook or by crook.
5. The fact that the DP is still collecting evidence against Minister Makhaye is laughable - they have been doing this since early January. The DP first lodges a complaint against Minister Makhaye before it gathers evidence. This indicates the bankruptcy of the DP logic.
6. The time given to the DP to gather evidence begins to affect the impartiality of the Speaker.
