GOVERNMENT APPOINTS PUBLIC RELATIONS ADVISERS FOR THE TELKOM IPO

The Department of Public Enterprises today announced the appointment of a South African communications agency, Meropa Communications, and an international financial communications consultancy, Smithfield Financial Ltd, (together the Meropa Smithfield consortium) as public relations and marketing advisers to the Government in respect of the initial public offering of shares in Telkom SA.

The appointment follows a competitive selection process administered on behalf of the government by Deutsche Bank and JP Morgan, the Joint Global Co-ordinators for the IPO. Both the Department of Public Enterprises and Government Communication and Information System participated in the selection process.

Meropa Smithfield will be responsible for advising Government on the development and implementation of a communications strategy to support the transaction in accordance with the government's objective for a successful IPO with broad public participation, particularly among the previously disadvantaged in South Africa. Meropa Smithfield will work jointly with the Telkom appointed Public Relations advisors, College Hill.
