The South African government expresses its deep concern at the escalating conflict in Afghanistan which culminated in the destruction of the historic Buddha statues on a world heritage site in Bamiyan.
The execution of the edict in defiance of international appeals is not helpful to the cause which the Taliban government has vowed to pursue. We urge all parties to the conflict, to exercise restraint and allow an atmosphere conducive for delivery of essential services and humanitarian assistance, to prevail.
We call on the Taliban government to desist from actions which would lead to untold misery and loss of innocent lives amongst Afghans and explore methods for peaceful resolution of the conflict.
