MOBILE MINISTER BACKS BIKES

09 March 2001

The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar supports an initiative by AFRIBIKE to promote the use of non-motorised transport as a means of supporting low-cost mobility, job creation, poverty alleviation, education, sustainable development, and environmental protection. The pilot project will be launched at the weekend at Langa on Saturday 10 March 2001, 08h30 to 09h30.

Langa has been selected as the site of this pilot project in recognition of the rich sporting and cultural history that the area and its people have afforded Cape Town since the early 1920’s. AFRIBIKE promotes the use of the bicycle as a means of transport, thereby facilitating access to new opportunities for many that would otherwise be denied. The timing of this launch has been set to coincide with the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour and the festival of cycling during the week in greater Cape Town.

It is envisaged that the AFRIBIKE Langa project will go some way towards developing a cycling culture in Langa to support the work already achieved by the Sports Council, City of Cape Town Sports and Recreation Department, and the Tshepiso and Rainbow Cycling Clubs.

The VENUE for the launch is MONWABISI COMMUNITY CENTRE, corner of Brinton & Rose-innes roads, Langa. Minister Omar is expected to ride a bike at Langa, watch this space.
