SHILOWA IS SHOCKED BY THE BARA DEATH INCIDENT

Issued by: Office of the Premier Gauteng Provincial Government

9 March 2001

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa was shocked by a report which appeared in a daily newspaper about a woman who had died at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and taken to undertakers with a still born baby in her womb.

The premier has instructed MEC for Health Gwen Ramokgopa to investigate the matter with the hospital authorities to find out what went wrong and who is responsible for any wrongdoing. Appropriate action will be taken against whomever is found to be responsible for this terrible thing.

The premier wishes to reassure the people of Gauteng that this incident is not representative of the kind of service that we should all expect from hospitals and other public healthcare facilities. The premier takes this opportunity to express heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
