1 March 2001
The MEC for Education, Ignatius Jacobs condemns the March held today by COSAS and SASCO. Once again learners have lost another day of learning.
The MEC condemns the havoc and mayhem that took place throughout the city of Johannesburg since this morning. We hope that the owners of properties that have been vandalised will pursue their rights to take action against those responsible.
It is clear that there is a need for COSAS and SASCO to rethink their strategies on how to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the education authorities. It is regrettable that the past three protest actions have brought the same results. Property vandalised and hawkers threatened, goods stolen and properties destroyed.
Our channels remain open for discussion with COSAS and SASCO. We believe these are the channels where they could engage us.
Thank you.
