THE POSTPONEMENT OF THE SA HUMANITARIAN FLIGHT TO IRAQ

20 February 2001

The SA government has acceded to a request from the SA Iraq Action Committee (SAIAC) to postpone the humanitarian aid flight to Iraq previously scheduled to depart from South Africa on 22 Feb 2001.

The flight will now depart South Africa for Baghdad on 28 Feb and return on March 3, 2001. Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad will lead the SA delegation on this visit.

The postponement will enable the SAIAC to respond to and accommodate the massive response to the humanitarian flight from individual South Africans and civil society organisations and ensure that preparations for acquiring the humanitarian assistance can be fully completed.
