FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE CENTRE BILL

Joint Press statement issued by Ms. Barbara Hogan, MP, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Finance and Adv. Johnny de Lange, MP, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice & Constitutional Development

The Financial Intelligence Centre Bill was introduced in Parliament early this year and will be referred to the Portfolio Committee on Finance jointly with the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, for consideration.

The Bill is aimed at combating money laundering activities; to establish for this purpose a Financial Intelligence Centre and a Money Laundering Advisory Council; to impose certain duties on institutions and other persons who maybe used for money laundering purposes; and to provide for incidental matters.

Any person or organization that would like to make written representations on the Financial Intelligence Centre Bill should do so by no later than 5 March 2001. Anyone who would like to give further oral evidence to the Committees in regard to their written submissions should notify the Committees by no later than 5 March 2001.

At this stage we are provisionally setting aside the dates of the 20, 23 and 27-30 March 2001, for public hearings if any.

The Committees request all persons and institutions who wish to send submissions to make 40 copies available to the Committees, if possible.

It should be pointed out that the Committees reserve the right to decide:
