SPECIAL INVESTIGATING UNITS AND SPECIAL TRIBUNALS AMENDMENT BILL

Press statement issued by Adv. Johnny de Lange, MP, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Justice & Constitutional Development.

The Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Amendment Bill is in the process of being introduced in Parliament and will be referred to the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development for consideration.

The Bill is aimed at amending the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Act, 1996, in order to give effect to a judgment by the Constitutional Court, which provides for the appointment of an appropriate person other than a judge as the head of a SIU.

If any person or organization would like to make written representations on the Special Investigating Units and Special Tribunals Amendment Bill he or she should do so by no later than 2 March 2001. Anyone who would like to give further oral evidence to the Committee in regard to his or her written submissions should notify the Committee by no later than 2 March 2001. If the need should arise public hearings will provisionally be scheduled for 6 and 7 March 2001.

The Committee requests all persons and institutions that wish to send submissions to make 30 copies available to the Committee, if possible.
