MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, DULLAH OMAR, SUPPORTS UPGRADING OF MOLOTO ROAD

31 January 2001

The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar today expressed his support for the upgrading of Moloto Road. The road has seen many deaths of pedestrians, bus passengers and motorists. The current state of the road requires that at the very least, hazardous locations should receive immediate attention.

Moloto Road is a provincial road falling under the Gauteng and Mpumalanga government. Minister Omar has met both MEC's to discuss what can be done to assist the provincial government to upgrade the roads. The Gauteng government has already proceeded with the upgrading falling under its jurisdiction. Mpumalanga government has indicated that it does not have the resources at present, but is committed to upgrade the road as soon as possible.

Minister Omar visited and traveled along the road to see for himself what the situation was. He will discuss the matter with the provincial MEC for Transport for Mpumalanga, Mr Steve Mabona, to see what can be done to assist the province in upgrading the road.
