Acting president Jacob Zuma on Friday expressed shock about the loss of life and the destruction caused by the earthquake in the west Indian town of Bhuj in the state of Gujarat.
In a letter to Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Zuma sent the condolences of the government and people of South Africa to the government and people of India, in particular to the families of those who died in the earthquake.
"Natural disasters are frequently a test of the resilience and resourcefulness of people and governments," Zuma said.
"The people of South Africa wish to convey their heartfelt condolences and wish India a speedy resolution of the situation during this trying time.
"This unfortunate event underlines the need for continuous international co-operation in matters of disaster prevention, management and relief, Zuma said."
