PARLIAMETARY QUESTIONS, AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR WORK

25 January 2001

The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar answered all 137 Parliamentary Questions put through to him during the 2000 Parliamentary Session.

In the National Assembly, a total of 124 questions were answered. Of the 124 questions, 78 were written questions and the rest (46) were oral questions. In the National Council of Provinces, a total of 11 questions were answered. Of which 9 were written questions and 2 were orals.

Questions varied from air transport, road, sea and rail transport. Road safety, road conditions, fraud and corruption and shortage of traffic officers were some highlights which were common concerns raised by both the ruling ANC and opposition parties.

The majority of the questions were mainly on road transport and road traffic safety and management. In view of the outrageous road safety record, Minister Omar reiterated his intentions of introducing a comprehensive road safety programme for South Africa this year.

Other key institutions aimed at tackling law enforcement and general compliance with the law are also expected to be introduced this year. These include the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and Adjudication and Administration of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO). "My Department is gearing itself this year for visible delivery. We have put in place legislation to enable us to build a transport system, which is reliable, efficient and cost effective. We will also take advantage of the newly established mega cities and municipalities to ensure that delivery happens at the very local level", Minister Omar concluded.
