Issued by: THE GAUTENG PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT
22 January 2001
The Gauteng Department of Education is so far satisfied with progress in all schools in the past week. We are also satisfied with the fact that the Learning Support Materials in schools arrived in time and all learners have so far accessed them.
Learning and Teaching in more than 90% of schools resumed in earnest in the past week. It is now evident that learners, teachers and parents active participation in building our education system for the 21st century is beginning to bear results. There are still areas we need to improve on, but it is fairly satisfactory.
It is unfortunate that some Political Parties have issued statements claiming failure of the department to supply material, and this being done without noting the entire picture within the province, and more-so without the facts at East Bank High School in Alexandra.
The situations at East Bank and Kwabengilanga are in control, and further there are plans to turn these schools into Science and Technology Centres. An agreement between the Department, Schools and ACDC, which leads to the introduction of FET, is in effect.
It is regrettable that each and every facet of the South African socio-economic life will be subjected to petty political point scoring without an indepth investigation into facts.
The MEC congratulates learners, teachers and parents for their resentless efforts despite difficult conditions in making sure that learning and teaching takes place. Let this happen daily for the rest of the remaining days of schooling.
Thanking you.
