STATEMENT CONCERNING THE ATTEMPTED COUP D'ETAT IN COTE D'IVOIRE

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

8 January 2001

The Ministry and Department of Foreign Affairs has noted with concern the reported take-over of the national radio and television stations by armed forces, and the sporadic occurrence of gunfire by military elements in the city of Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. The Department will continue to monitor developments with keen interest.

The Ministry and Department of Foreign Affairs urges all parties within Cote d'Ivoire to work in a peaceful and concerted manner towards achieving a solution to the political problems which beset the country over the past year.

The Ministry and Department of Foreign Affairs reiterates the position taken by the OAU's Committee of Ten last September which calls for an inclusive and participatory process amongst all political players in the country. It is hoped that urgent efforts will be made to return calm to the country and consolidate efforts being made towards democratic civilian government.
