NOTICE RELATING TO SMOKING OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS IN PUBLIC PLACES
5 JANUARY 2001
It has come to the attention of the Minister of Health that some members of the hospitality industry are experiencing difficulties in implementing the Tobacco Products Amendment Act. It appears that certain restaurants, bars, pubs, guest houses are experiencing difficulties with either making structural changes or getting necessary permission from the liquor board in terms of the regulation.
Members of the hospitality industry were required to make applications to the Department of Health for an extension of time to make structural changes before 31 December 2000. Because of difficulties that have been experienced, the Minister has therefore decided to extend the date of the application s to 31 January 2001. It is important to note that the extension time applies to only members of the hospitality industry.
The applicants are required to provide detailed information on what structural changes they intend to make and why there is a delay in the implementation of their plan. All structural changes must be effected by June 2001. Only those businesses that have applied to the Department of Health for an extension and which have been granted such will be allowed to comply with the regulations by not later than 30 June 2001.
