7 January 2001
The Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma arrived in Accra, Ghana, last night on 6 January 2001 for the inauguration of the new President of Ghana, Mr John Agyekum Kufuor.
Deputy President Zuma was received by incoming Vice-president, Alhaji Aliu Mahama and other senior leaders of the incoming government.
Briefing journalists on arrival, Deputy President Zuma said the inauguration and the transfer of power from the previous government of former president Flt-Lt John Rawlings to that of newly-elected president Kufuor was a shining example of the entrenchment of democracy on the African continent.
The Deputy President further said: "The transition in Ghana augurs well for economic development since political stability provides a conducive climate for foreign investments."
Deputy President Zuma held a bilateral meeting with incoming president Kufuor last night. He congratulated him on his electoral victory and wished him and the Ghanaian people well. They also discussed matters of common interest such as deepening relations between the two countries.
Ghana represents one of the major export markets for South African goods within the West African region, and it is expected that this will continue to reflect growth.
