The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar is expected to announce the final outcome of the current Arrive Alive Campaign on Monday, January 08, 2001. Omar is likely to point out how the campaign was conducted overall, its strengths and weaknesses. He will also zoom-in on the major causes, contributory factors, numbers of vehicles involved, the fines issued by traffic officers, the number of cases heard by the mobile courts, number of people arrested and other information which is currently analysed by the Arrive Alive Information Center. Of particular concern to Minister Omar is the number of pedestrians who have died on our roads since the beginning of December.
Minister Omar is also expected to announce immediate plans the Department will concentrate on when implementing the year-long Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign.
The press conference will be held in Pretoria, 159 Forum Building, cnr Struben and Bosman Strs, at 10H00. Gauteng MEC for Transport, Mr Khabisi Mosunkutu and Mpumalanga MEC for Transport, Mr. Steve Mabona will join Minister Omar at the press conference after where, they will all tour the Moloto Road, which claimed the lives of more than 12 people in December 2000.
