4 January 2001
The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar has reminded all operators of all old and new vehicles and trailers over 10 000kg GVM to be fitted with distinctive yellow retro-reflective tape to the side and rear of their heavy vehicles and trailers. Minister Omar said the legislation, which came into operation on January 01, 2001 will be implemented in all the provinces.
A recent survey on the main trunk roads showed that about 50% of all heavies already have the tape fixed, and indicates the positive way in which the legislation has been received. Since 1 July 1999, Regulation 192A required all new vehicles and trailers over 10 000 kg GVM to be fitted. Since January 01 this year, all the heavy vehicles and trailers over 10 000 kg GVM now on our roads must also be fitted with this tape on the sides and rear as in Reg 192A.
Regulation 191 also requires that the chevron boards on all vehicles over 3 500 kg GVM must be of the new doubly reflective material i.e. the yellow must also be retro-reflective as well as the red from 1 January 2001.
Minister Omar congratulated those operators who have introduced the yellow retro-reflective tape and the new chevron well in advance of the legislation also to encouraged those who have not done so, to comply in good time.
"For those motorists, truck and bus drivers who travel the roads at night these retro-reflective measures must be the most obvious brilliant steps forward in road safety that they have seen for years", Omar said.
