MEC STATEMENT REPORT ON THE ALEXANDRA FAR EAST BANK
DATE: Monday, 18 December, 2000 Venue: Department of Housing 9th floor boardroom
We would like to confirm that all houses were sold during the auctions which occurred on Thursday, December 14, 2000. The required deposits were also paid except for 10 people who have until today to pay their deposits. Should there be any withdrawals we will uses the Provincial Waiting List to continue with the allocation of the remaining number of houses.
My Department has taken a decision not to proceed with the auctions because this action was regarded as a last resort, as you may recall in the last statement that I made on the Alexandra issue. This decision was due to the fact that the Johannesburg Council in conjunction with a private developer, namely Siemerg will be taking over the flats which makes up 150 units. This will be done with the view to renting them out to the people of Alexandra.
With regards to the issue of illegal occupants and invaders of government property, a security company has been instructed to continue evicting the invaders using minimum force where necessary and avoiding confrontation at all cost.
On the other hand a report of investigation into the alleged corruption by some officials in the Department has been received from the Auditor Generals Office. This report contains a range of recommendations which are likely administrative in nature such as better management of the Provincial Waiting List list. These recommendations are already being implemented.
The Auditor General's Report also dealt with the issue of alleged corruption of councillors. This issue has also been dealt with and all councillors mentioned in the report have been cleared of all allegations except for two councillors and their case has been referred to the State Attorney for further action.
