STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENCY ON POST OF DIRECTOR, MEDIA LIAISON IN THE PRESIDENCY

The Presidency has appointed Mr Bheki Khumalo as Director: Media Liaison with effect from January 2000. Mr Khumalo has been spokesperson at the Ministry of Education for several years.

The appointment of Mr Khumalo in The Presidency is part of the effort to build communications capacity. His appointment comes at a crucial moment when The Presidency is restructuring its communication facility following a fundamental strategic review in past months to ensure continued effective, efficient and transparent running of the office. Mr Khumalo, 34 will deal with a wide range of issues, institutions and personalities involved in the media world. The Presidency has recently advertised a number of senior posts in communications, including the Head of Communications.

Mr Khumalo, after student activism in the apartheid era at Tembisa High School and Fort Hare University, where he headed the Students' Representative Councils of both institutions, worked for an electrical engineering company and in 1994 went into local politics and was deputy chair of the executive council of Kempton Park/Tembisa City Council and also an elected ANC councillor of the Khayalami Metropolitan Council. He joined the Ministry of Education in 1998, and served first Minister Sibusiso Bengu and currently Minister Kader Asmal as spokesperson.

He has a wide range of experience in dealing with media in educational and other matters, and brings to his new job insights into public affairs that will be of value to South Africa as a whole.
