Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa has appointed ANC MPL Angelina Motshekga as MEC for Social Services and Population Development. Mrs Motshekga fills the vacancy created by former MEC Peter Skosana's deployment to the Vaal District Council.
Mrs Motshekga was born in Pimville, Soweto in 1955. After completing her secondary education she went to study at the University of the North where she obtained a B.A Education degree in 1979. In 1983 she obtained a B Ed degree from Wits university, and in 1995 she completed a Masters degree in Education at the same institution.
Mrs Motshekga taught history at Orlando High School from 1979 to 1981. She moved on to Soweto College of Education where she taught History and Education.
In 1985 she joined Wits University and was appointed as a lecturer in African Languages methodology. She left Wits in 1994 when she was appointed as a director in the RDP office in the office of the President. When the RDP office was disbanded in 1996 she was transferred to the Deputy President's Office and appointed as a director of gender programmes.
In 1997, the South African Management and Development Institute appointed Mrs Motshekga as head of its transformation and gender unit. She became a member of the Gauteng Legislature in 1999, and was appointed as Chairperson of the education committee - a position she will relinquish when she takes up her new post on 16 December 2000.
Angelina, a mother of six is married to former Premier of Gauteng Mathole Motshekga.
The Premier takes this opportunity to express gratitude to former MEC Peter Skosana for his excellent and loyal service to the provincial government and the people of Gauteng. He wishes him the best of luck in his new deployment, and has no doubt that he will use the experience he gained as MEC to help develop the Vaal.
