TRANSPORT MEC CLAMPS DOWN ON ABUSE OF GOVERNMENT VEHICLES

29 November 2000

MEC for Transport and Public Works, Mr Khabisi Mosunkutu has launched a concerted inspection campaign to curb the misuse of government vehicles in the province. The campaign started on Friday 24 November 2000. Since then Traffic inspectors have already impounded 72 vehicles. The Departments involved include Trade & Industry, Minerals & Energy Affairs, Education, Health, Transport & Public Works among others.

"We are determined to stop the abuse and lack of respect for government property. Officials must understand that state motor transport is to be used for official purposes only. If we are to render an efficient and effective transport service to user departments some government officials will have to alter their reckless and irresponsible attitude towards state transport," MEC Mosunkutu stressed.

MEC Mosunkutu pointed out that every driver of a state vehicle must have in his/her possession a Trip Authority with date, time, passengers and places to be visited correctly completed, including a valid driver's license and logbooks/logsheets/trip sheets. Both driver and vehicle must be fit to be on the road. Disciplinary measures against offenders include verbal or written warnings, suspension and/or banning from driving, fines to cover part of the cost of repairs, also direct dismissal depending on the gravity of the offence.

The Gauteng Department of Transport and Public Works provides approximately 6 000 vehicles to 44 National Departments and organisational components, 12 Provincial Departments and as and when required to the 8 provinces.
