HOUSING MEC'S POSITION ON ALLOCATION OF HOUSES IN ALEXANDRA FAR EAST BANK PHASE 2

28 November 2000

There has been widespread allegations of corruption and irregularities in the manner in which the allocation of houses was conducted in Alexandra Far East Bank, Phase 2.

To this end, the Gauteng Housing Department needs to inform the public of what steps are currently being taken, in order to speed up the process of allocation and occupation of the houses. The MEC said, "It is the Gauteng Department's intention to bring the matter to a speedy resolution and conclusion, in a transparent and open manner".

The houses in question have been divided into two broad categories namely;

1. Houses ( including walk-up units that are completely unallocated amount to 108)

2. Houses (including walk-up units that are allocated, but not occupied amount to 191).

There is a process already underway, whereby individuals that were originally allocated these houses are being contacted through various mechanisms, to come and take occupation of their houses. If these people do not come forward and take occupation of these houses by Wednesday the 29th November 2000, the houses shall be deemed as unallocated.

On Friday the 1st December 2000, the Gauteng Housing Department shall then advertise in the public media of its intentions to auction these houses during the 15th, 18th, and 19th December 2000. Furthermore, The Gauteng Housing Department is of considered opinion that this is the best mechanism of resolving the current problem.
