Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa joins the Johannesburg residents who have raised concerns about the plans by the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council to do away with the Christmas lights and decorations during this festive season.
The Premier is of the view that the council's decision goes against the grain of the ongoing process to regenerate Johannesburg. The Christmas lights and decorations have become an attraction for Gauteng families as well as domestic and foreign tourists.
The Premier has already raised the issue with council officials.
The Premier believes that the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Council can and should find the funds required for the lights and decorations over the festive period.
The Premier urges the council to reverse its decision and allow Johannesburg residents and all those who will be spending the festive season in the city to enjoy a lively and colourful Johannesburg.
