ALEXANDRA HOUSING

The Gauteng Executive Council today discussed a report from the MEC for Housing, Paul Mashatile, on investigations into alleged impropriety in the allocation of low-cost houses in Tsutsumani Village and Far East Bank in Alexandra. The Executive Council expressed its full support for the process initiated by the MEC to address the allegations, including an investigation by the Auditor General. The Auditor General's findings and recommendations are expected to be submitted by the end of November. The Executive Council reiterated that any irregularities would be acted upon.

WORLD AIDS DAY

The Executive Council expressed its full support for a range of activities in Gauteng to mark World Aids Day on 1 December 2000. The campaign will focus on this year's theme, "Men make a difference", as well as care and support for those affected by Aids.

Premier Mbhazima Shilowa, and Members of the Executive Council, public servants, members of the Gauteng Aids Council, sectors involved in the Partnership Against Aids and the people of Gauteng will be involved in public events from 30 November to 5 December.

Further details of the campaign will be announced at a media briefing on 27 November by the Premier and the MEC for Health, Gwen Ramakgopa.

MUNICIPAL POLICE

The Executive Council noted with enthusiasm a report by the MEC for Safety and Liaison, Nomvula Mokonyane, on progress towards the establishment of Municipal Police Services in Gauteng. In terms of legislation, the MEC for Safety and Liaison is responsible for the approval of applications by Gauteng municipalities for the establishment of municipal police services in consultation with MECs for Finance and Economic Affairs, Local Government and Development Planning and Public Transport, Roads and Works.

Consultation with local authorities has taken place to develop a common approach to municipal police services in Gauteng. Progress has been made in the determination of uniforms, insignia, training and setting of standards.

Details will be announced at a media briefing by the MEC tomorrow (23 November).

2001/2002 BUDGET

The Executive Council adopted resolutions arising from the Executive Council's Budget Lekgotla from 8 to 10 November including programmes and projects to give effect to the provincial government's three top priorities of economic growth and development, infrastructure investment and job creation; the provision of quality social services and good governance. Details will be announced next year.
